CYMT partners with churches from multiple denominations within a four-hour radius of Memphis, TN and Austin, TX to place incoming graduate residents for 3 years of practicum as youth ministers. In addition to the placement of the graduate resident in the church, CYMT equips partner churches with the tools necessary to develop sustainable youth ministries and walks alongside them over the 3-year program.
CYMT partners with congregations and individuals representing the theological views and diversity of mainline Protestant Christianity. We partner with mainline Protestant denominations including the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian (PCUSA), Cumberland Presbyterian, Lutheran (ECLA), Episcopal, Disciples of Christ, American Baptist, and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Our partner seminaries include Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary or Memphis Theological Seminary.
CYMT graduate residents will serve 25 hours per week as youth minister over the 3-year program
Development of 3-year strategic plan for church’s youth ministry
CYMT selects only the top candidates from a national pool of applicants
Personalize coaching for the graduate resident and the church’s youth ministry team
The Center for Youth Ministry Training takes seriously the placement of our residents and desires to partner with churches who are actively engaged in enhancing their ministry to and with youth. Churches will be accepted to the program based on their readiness to meet our partnership expectations. Acceptance is always conditional on finding a good match in the placement process. CYMT recommends that churches begin the application process in the fall in preparation for a summer placement.
The online interest form takes about thirty minutes and provides CYMT with general information and data about your church. The interest form does not commit your church to formally applying; it simply indicates your interest in learning more. CYMT will contact your church within three business days of receiving and reviewing your form. At this point, we can answer any questions you have as you decide whether or not to proceed to Step 2 of the process.
To make a formal application to the Center for Youth Ministry Training Partner or Training Church program, your church must complete a congregational survey. This survey will broaden CYMT’s understanding of the congregation and help discern whether or not your church would be a good fit for our program. You will select six to eight people from your congregation to complete an online survey. The survey will take them approximately thirty minutes.
Your church leadership must sign the Memorandum of Understanding acknowledging your understanding of the expectations of churches during the program. You will be asked to submit a copy of your current budget and your child protection policy. Finally, you will be required to pay a $350 application fee.
A CYMT staff person will come and interview your congregation and leadership to learn even more about your church’s context and needs and to ensure congregational buy-in to the Partner Church Process. Within ten business days of the onsite interview, CYMT will inform the church whether or not it will be accepted and begin the formal matching process.
CYMT will work diligently to find a good match for your congregation. Submission of the formal affiliation agreement between CYMT and the church and receipt of the initial payment are both required prior to meeting our recommended candidate for your church.
The partner church’s investment covers the graduate resident’s tuition, books, seminary fees, coaching, mileage, and monthly stipend. The partner church is responsible for providing housing for the graduate resident.
