Brief Church Mission Statement?

God has been at work in First Presbyterian Church of Marietta (FPC) since its inception in 1835. We
believe God’s mission for our congregation is to transform lives with faith, hope, and love. Our
landmark church, two blocks from the Marietta Square, is steeped in tradition and at the same time,
looks to the future with joyful anticipation. Our Senior Pastor leads our church’s vision and
mission, and our congregation responds with great enthusiasm.

We are servants of the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave us this commission:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching
them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo I am with you always, to the close of the
age.” Matthew 28:18-20.

We understand this to mean that we are called to: praise and listen to God in worship and prayer,
proclaim God’s grace in mission and in outreach, offer our fellowship to all, serve the needs of
the people, and nurture ourselves and others in Christ through the teachings of the Bible.

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry?

Our vision is to be a community, traditional, and multi-generational church.

We feel called to live as Christians, sharing the good news of Christ, which motivates us to keep
our doors, hearts, and His table open to all. We spread the message of Jesus Christ by sharing in
meaningful corporate worship. Our relationship with Christ starts as a child and thrives through
active involvement in worship. The youth participate in corporate worship through music, liturgy,
leading prayer, and serving as acolytes.

With gratefulness to God, we are inspired to action by His words. We value maximizing the
transformative power of God within one person at a time, versus maximizing our number of members.
Our vision is built upon these values with a focus on our congregation, community, and world:

1. Build on our reformed traditions

2. Focus on ministries that will provide the most impact

3. Grow our young family ministry

4. Reach out to the community

God continues to work out His purpose at FPC. We pray for unity rather than uniformity. We ask for
the Holy Spirit’s guidance in finding the Associate Pastor who will strive with us to make our
vision a reality.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or
constituency?

For many years, FPC has provided Marietta and Cobb County with a successful youth ministry serving
children from FPC, other churches, and those with no church.

As our youth mature in age and faith, our ministry evolves to meet their needs. Development is
enhanced within each age group during Sunday evening activities as well as missions and retreats
which include:

• Ventures: (4th/5th grade), short, local retreats to start building their disciple-making
skills.

• Middle School: An annual trip to locations within the U.S. putting their discipleship skills
to work in community projects.

High School: Local, regional, and international missions are available. A summer trip to Mexico
allows them to work together with our partner church to build homes in a different culture. Over
spring break, upperclassmen may travel abroad to God’s mission field in such places as Cuba,
Central America, and Europe.

2

• MS and HS: An annual retreat with other area churches fosters growth within the body of
Christ; an annual retreat for FPC allows the youth a chance to reflect on their personal faith
walk; and regular summer activities bolster community.

FPC is taking a systems approach to youth ministry. Our adult and youth leadership are currently
forming a Youth Council and creating an infrastructure, vision, and culture to prepare the way. The
Associate Pastor will step into this supportive system to minister to our youth while our Youth
Council provides logistical and operational support.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

The Associate Pastor will have a key role at this exciting time in our church, working together
with the Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor(s), Director of Music, staff, youth and other councils and
committees. God guides the growth in our youth ministry. The pastor will bring passion and the
creative vision to our youth ministry, while working in a sustainable framework supported by
faithful adults.

Our vision for youth complements that of our church. FPC is looking for a pastor who guides the
youth ministry team to encourage:

• Middle schoolers to know that they are beautifully and wonderfully made because they bear the
image of their Creator.

• High schoolers to value a tradition rooted in the good news of the biblical narrative while
growing into new, young leaders who embody the transformative love of Christ.

FPC’s Youth culture embraces a climate where transformation can take place, patience for process is
embraced, the smallest successes are celebrated, and the stories of the youth and our church are
captured and made known. The Associate Pastor will play a pivotal role in continuing this
tradition.

Supportive infrastructures for this position include:

1. Directories of youth, volunteer leaders, and visitors

2. Annual events calendar

3. Job descriptions for each volunteer leader role

4. Master recruiting list for volunteer leaders

5. Curriculum template
