Galloway is seeking an outgoing, dynamic individual with a commitment to Wesleyan theology to nurture our youth and grow the youth ministry in our downtown church.

Description:

The Minister to Students is a vital position that is an integral part of the Family Ministry Spiritual Formation Ministry Team at Galloway that is supervised by the Minister to Families pastor.  Galloway is a congregation that believes in welcoming all people and has an inclusive ethos within her membership. The Family Ministry, of which the Student Ministry is a vital part, is committed to this congregational ethos through our Family Ministry Spiritual Formation Core Values: Loved and Accepting, Confident and Questioning, Compassionate and Engaged.

We seek a Minister to Students who is called to serve youth in grades 7-12, students in college or graduate/professional school, and their families. The candidate would evidence a contagious enthusiasm for Christ and youth with proven gifts of administration and communication (oral and written). The candidate demonstrates deep United Methodist theological grounding and gifts of leadership. The Minister to Students will oversee, organize, and implement ministry to, with and alongside students and volunteers to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. An effective Minister to Students will help cast a vision and implement a strategic plan to equip and empower youth and adult leaders to companion and form students to live in community with mission as a way of life, oversee youth and college student bible studies, United Methodist Youth Fellowship, Sunday School for youth and college students. The Minister to Students will coordinate retreats, inspire, vision, and collaborate with area sister UMC churches to implement Missionfest (mission opportunities) and other youth/college spiritual formation opportunities within District 4 church partnerships for youth.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Establish workable, regular system of communication with youth, parents, and volunteers.
  • Recruit adult volunteers of all ages to assist in youth ministry.
  • Lead, and recruit volunteer leaders, for youth and college activities including Sunday school and mid-week bible studies for Jr. High and for Sr. High (age-appropriate for each).
  • Frequently and regularly engage students in venues outside the church, e.g., ball games, school programs, college campus visits, etc.
  • Work with Minister to Families and the Family Ministry Spiritual Formation Team to cast and implement the ongoing strategic plan for Galloway’s Family Ministry that implements our four Core Values for Family Ministry.
  • Cultivate/teach students various age-appropriate ways of personal Bible-reading and spiritual formation continually demonstrating importance and relevance of the Scriptures and of prayer.
  • Provide students and parents with a variety of guides, aids, devotionals, which will help individuals find their own authentic ways of faith formation and discipleship.
  • Lead students in ways that foster mutual support and the gift of community in Christ.
  • In collaboration with other GUMC staff, seek to develop opportunities for youth involvement within Galloway such as drama, missions and outreach, church camps, worship, etc.
  • Actively recruit unchurched youth, while maintaining a proportional emphasis on discipleship & nurture.
  • Equip students to engage in relational faith-sharing that is authentic to their own respective individual personalities.
  • Oversee and guide the Youth Spiritual Formation Team of volunteers.
  • Under the direction of the Family Minister pastor- collaborate with the Children’s Director to plan and implement Confirmation.
  • Provide pastoral care for students.
  • Engage in intentional relationships with college students in the Jackson Metro area as well as remaining in relationships with Galloway Collegians in other geographic areas.
  • Lead regularly in worship and participate in weekly worship planning meetings.
