Job Description:
Basic Functions:
The Director of Children & Family Ministry serves to assist the church in accomplishing its mission to make
disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The Director will design, develop, implement and
ensure our Children and Family ministries are sustainably structured, aligned with our mission and vision, and
executed with excellence.
Ministry/Administrative Responsibilities:
1. The Director of CFM will work to ensure a high quality and innovative faith formation program
for children (preschool- 6
th grade) and their families.
2. Oversee and evaluate current Children & Family Ministry programs and develop new opportunities
as needs are assessed.
3. Prepare and maintain the annual budget for Children & Family Ministry to be included in the Church
Budget.
4. Select materials and oversee the development, implementation and execution of all children and
family ministries (sample current offerings listed below).
5. Work with MDFUMC staff to maintain a system to track attendance and effectiveness of children,
families, and volunteers associated with the Children & Family Ministry. Provide quarterly reports
regarding adult, child, parent, and volunteer attendance at all programs and report on the program
effectiveness.
6. Creates lesson plans and teaches as needed for children/family ministries, (i.eChildren’s Church,
Sunday School, Wednesday Family Night,VBS, camps, social activities and outreach ministries.)
7. Actively and continually recruits volunteers to support both the Wednesday evening programming
and Sunday’s children’s church in strict compliance with the United Methodist Church’s Children and
Youth Protection policy.
8. Directly supervises the Nursery Supervisors (Sunday, Wednesday, special events)

Recruit, train, and supervise a volunteer team as well as Children & Family Ministry staff.
1. Communicate with volunteers and staff regarding event logistics and support.
2. Recruit and maintain a robust team of volunteers through training, equipping, and supporting
their ministry with children and families.
3. Ensures, schedules and teaches the Child Protection Policy.
Facilitate opportunities for families to grow in faith together.
1. Work collaboratively to create opportunities for parents and families to connect with one another
through activities (parent’s night out, family dinners, etc.)
2. Provide support and resources to parents in order to assist them in nurturing the faith development
of their children.
3. Provide leadership and consultation for churchwide/seasonal events that are child-/family-
centered (Lent, Advent, and Other Seasonal Gatherings.)
4. Communicate regularly with children and families to build relationships, offer support, and give
encouragement.
5. Keep families engaged and informed through weekly emails and/or other avenues of
communication to include the monthly church newsletter.
Coordinate outreach efforts to invite and welcome new children and their families.
1. Create and maintain an environment of acceptance and inclusivity in order for children of all
backgrounds and abilities experience the love and grace of God.
2. Serve as a liaison with area schools to provide support and offer Christian Education resources
(chapel, curriculum, classroom visits)
3. Develop evangelistic opportunities to welcome and invite children in the church’s surrounding
neighborhood to participate in the Children & Family Ministry programs.
Advocate for Children & Family Ministries in the whole ministry of the church.
1. Represent Children & Family Ministry at staff meetings and work collegially with staff.
2. Provide reports to the Church Council to keep these leaders apprised of Children & Family
Ministry news and updates.
3. Participate in quarterly supervisor check-ins and an annual review.
4. Support children’s music ministry leaders and seek opportunities for children participate in worship.
5. Work with the Director of Mission and Outreach to offer intergenerational ministry opportunities.
6. Work with the Director of Youth Ministry to coordinate outreach to students and families

Minimum Qualification: Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience/Knowledge, abilities, and skills:
●Bachelor’s Degree in education-related field, preferably Christian Education
●Minimum of 3 years of fulltime experience working with children, youth and adults preferred, including
knowledge of Christian Education curriculum and spiritual formation practices
●Must partake of an active and intentional spiritual life
●Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and parishioners
●Must demonstrate good oral and written communication skills
●Must demonstrate good time management and organizational skills
●Must be computer literate
●Must have verifiable and acceptable personal and/or work-related references, and pass a background check in
compliance with the Child/Youth Protection Policy
Physical Requirements:
● Due to several sets of stairs on the church property, applicant must have the ability to climb stairs since
there is no other way to access the balcony or basement.

Reporting and Working Expectations:
● This position reports to the Senior Pastor.
● Directly reporting to this position are the Nursery Supervisors (Sunday and Wednesday)
● Congenial, collaborative relationships and open communication with all Church staff, purpose driven
leaders and Church members is the expectation of all Church staff.
OTHER:
Working hours, compensation and benefits policy for this position are those delineated in the Personnel
Policy for all employees of the Church. Due to the exempt nature of this position, flexibility in work
schedules may be required, depending on the activity level in the Church.
Feedback regarding performance is an ongoing process, so evaluations and/or feedback will occur
throughout the year by the Senior Pastor, in conjunction with the SPPRC. Annually, the Senior Pastor
completes a written performance appraisal using the job description as a guideline and holds an appraisal
meeting with the staff member. The Staff/Pastor/Parish Relations Committee reviews all appraisals
